Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt sat down with Tom Brokaw on the Today show this morning to discuss their new film,By the Sea. "I don't want to give away too much about the film," Brokaw said, "But I think a lot of your fans and other moviegoers are going to be a little surprised by something...this is about the two of you and a deeply troubled marriage. Was this a big risk on your part?"
Jolie said, "I'm counting on the audience to know that if it was close to us at all, we could never make this film. It's because we're actually very, very stable and these aren't our issues.
Jolie and Pitt still defy Hollywood odds and have (as far as outsiders can ever tell) one of the strongest marriages among A-list stars. The duo can joke about their domestic life: "Every three months I'll say, 'Honey I think I should learn how to cook,'" Jolie laughs. Brad just shakes his head and says, "I'll just humor it. But really, she has no business in the kitchen." And then, they can also get serious.
When Jolie (who had lost her mother to cancer) went through her own battle with the disease, it made their bond even stronger. "It was another one of those things in life that makes you tighter," Pitt said. During her double mastectomy and surgery to have her ovaries removed (after discovering she was positive for the BRCA-1 gene mutation), Pitt said his role was "Support." He told Brokaw, "She was doing it for her kids and she was doing it for her family so we could be together."
Pitt called Jolie's response to the news "mature." Jolie told Brokaw, “I knew through the surgeries that he was on my side and that this wasn't something where I was gonna feel less of a woman, because my husband wasn't gonna let that happen.”
